Will's Hope

By Bonnie Ford Dunleavy

Brief Synopsys:

Will’s Hope is a fictional novel about a young man named William Casey. Several events in the book, however, are based on true accounts in the life of William Ford, Bonnie's dad.

William Casey’s unbridled, wild behavior has been fueled by his first tragedy, the loss of his little sister, Sarah. We know Sarah has died due to an accident. What the reader doesn’t know for some time is how the accident happened, but learns early on that whatever it was that happened that day drove Will to near destruction. Each act of rebellion also connected Will ever more to his dad’s past, a mysterious and painful past his dad refused to discuss and would like to forget.

‘Fist fights’ were fairly common with Will, but one in particular got him in a whole heck of a lot of trouble, trouble that landed him in a dark, cold jail cell. But still, nothing seemed to rid him of ghosts from his past, until something unexpected and remarkable was given to him. Will's father, Harry, and his mother, Claire, presented him with a special gift, a prize thoroughbred quarter horse named Sandy. After receiving Sandy, Will’s life turned around, just as his mother and father hoped it would. It wasn't long before Will grew to love Sandy, giving him his heart and undivided attention. Will’s life became filled with horse races and rodeos. He lived to ride, and so did Sandy. The life they began to share with each other completed them in a way that can only be known by those who love and are loved by a pet.

Still raw with the pain of Sarah's death, another tragedy decides to attack the Casey household, and Will is put to the test again. Could Will be confident in the words of his father, telling him to trust God, and that trusting God would give him hope for the future? Will’s close relationship with Sandy and the eventual romantic relationship with Lori Dune appear to have given him the tools he needed to move on, and painfully, yet ably, to hope for tomorrow.

Tragedy deals its final blow as a horrific horse accident takes place, leaving Will and Sandy broken, severely wounded, and barely alive. Will they survive? Was the race and life lessons taught by his parents all for naught? What did Will finally discover about hope and its value for his life?
